Matt Hardison, Senior Accountant
Family, as they say, is the tie that binds and leaving a family-owned business for new opportunities can be difficult. Luckily for Matthew Hardison, he feels his move to Rudler, PSC is the perfect fit for his long-term career goals.
Prior to joining Rudler, Matthew had spent three years working for Hardison & Hardison, LLP, the New Bern, NC tax service firm owned by his now-retired father Gerald (“Jerry” to friends and family). Not wishing to move the necessary 216+ miles south to New Bern from his Richmond, Va. Home to join the family business (and its new owners), Hardison instead decided venture out on his own.
“I really took my time and did about 4 months of interviews before I left my dad’s firm to really find the right spot because I was looking for somewhere I would want to be long term. I researched all the firms the recruiter gave me and (looking at) Rudler’s employee and client reviews, put them at the top of my list,” says Matthew, who accepted a position as a Senior Tax Accountant with the firm in July 2024. “Rudler went above and beyond to answer all my questions and be patient as I got into the swing of my new role, so I knew right away it was a good choice.”
Matthew felt well-prepared for his latest career move to Rudler, which will find him primarily working on business returns, analytical projects, as well as IRS and state tax notices. Prior to working for his father remotely, he spent time working as a Senior Tax Accountant for Stony Point Surgery/United Vascular, LLC, preparing monthly and quarterly reports for the company’s CFO, among other duties.
He served in a similar capacity for KPMG, LLP preparing real estate returns and completing estimated income tax returns, also serving on the firm’s state and local tax team. He began his career in 2017 as a Tax Associate for Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLC., preparing returns.
Despite having only worked at Rudler for a short period of time, Matthew already feels right at home at the firm because of the people with whom he works. “The first two weeks were great – I really saw how working at Rudler is designed to set people up for success instead of throwing you into work without much training,” he says.
When asked what he would like clients to know about him, Matthew’s response is simple: “I care about every problem they have.”
“I really don’t like to leave work unfinished,” he says. “Whether the job is big or small, I will always put in the time and effort required to make sure it’s quality work.”
Matthew is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2017. Away from work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his wife Becca, an emergency room doctor at VCU, whom he is set to marry in November 2024. In addition to spending time working with his church, Matthew is also a big sports fan, helping both coach youth and rooting the Baltimore Orioles, Carolina Panthers and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
